1976 Cy Young Winner Randy Jones Keynotes Boys & Girls Club Gala

Former San Diego Padres pitcher Randy Jones is one of the city's sports heroes. He encountered an enthusiastic crowd just north of the city on May 6th when he spoke at the Mad about The Boys & Girls Club of Vista Diamond Gala.

The gala was held at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa. Jones discussed the impact that the Boys & Girls Club had on him growing up in Fullerton, California.

He also presented a special "Padres Experience" item that was auctioned off. This year's event raised $95,000 for the Boys & Girls Club chapter that serves 2,400 area young people from the ages of 5-18.

Jones was an early star for the expansion Padres, pitching for the club from 1973-80. In 1975, he won 20 games, led the National League with a 2.24 ERA and finished second in NL Cy Young voting.

The following season, Jones won the Cy Young after picking up a major league-leading 22 victories while posting a 2.74 ERA. He was also named to the All-Star team for the second consecutive year.

Jones spent two final seasons with the New York Mets before retiring following the 1982 season. He is a member of the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame and his #35 jersey is retired by the team.
