Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry West Keynotes Coaches Academy Next Month

For the last four years, the Riverside Unified School District has been giving back to their coaches. The Coaches Academy attracts a top-level speaker each year to provide advice and guidance.

Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry West will speak this year on October 14th at the Fox Performing Arts Center. They previously hosted the academy in a ballroom at the Riverside Convention Center.

Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker and Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton spoke the previous two years. In addition to hearing from West, the coaches have the opportunity to network and explore other educational opportunities.

West spent his entire 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers and was named an All-Star each year. He was a ten-time All-NBA first-team and a four-time All-Defensive first-team member.

In 1970, West was the league scoring champion and helped the Lakers win the NBA championship. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1980 and named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1996.

West went on to serve as head coach of the Lakers and then won six NBA titles as the team's general manager. He also had a successful stint as the GM of the Memphis Grizzlies and currently serves as an advisor for the Los Angeles Clippers.
