Ex-Basketball Pro Chris Herren Inspires Crowd at Turning Point Drug Treatment Center

Inspiring former professional basketball player Chris Herren got to share his hopeful message with a new group last week.  Herren made his way to New Haven, Connecticut on Thursday to talk with the clients and staff at Turning Point.

Turning Point is a drug treatment facility for men.  Herren talked about his long battle with addiction and how he ultimately got clean in 2008.

He speaks with all sorts of groups in hopes of making an impact.  Herren has his own player development company Hoop Dreams that mentors players on and off the court.

His book, “Basketball Junkie: A Memoir”, was published in 2011.  A two-time Emmy nominated ESPN documentary called, “Unguarded”, also chronicles Herren’s story.

His first public troubles came when he failed multiple drug tests at Boston College and was kicked out.  While Herren achieved playing success at Fresno State, he also spent time in rehab during his tenure with the Bulldogs.

Despite the black marks on his resume, he was a second round pick of the Denver Nuggets in 1999 and also played an NBA season with the Boston Celtics.  Herren would take his game overseas as well, but addiction always went with.

After seven drug felonies, he finally completed the rehabilitation programs that would set his life on a new course.  Now, Herren stands as a positive influence in the lives of others from all walks of life.
