Ex-NHL Player Sheldon Kennedy Sells Out Swift Current United Way Annual Kickoff Breakfast

Wtih a documentary about his life recently released, former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy's story of persevering through unspeakable horrors has been brought to the top of minds again.  His message of empowerment today builds right into the theme of this year's United Way annual kickoff breakfast in the town where Kennedy skated in junior hockey.

Kennedy is the keynote speaker at the event in Swift Current, Saskatchewan this Friday that is wrapped with the theme "Empower Leaders".  The event is already a sellout for the first time in its history.

Donations will be accepted starting at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and part of the proceeds will go to the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre.  The United Way has set a 2016 local goal to raise $135,000.

In addition to the luncheon, Kennedy will be on hand that night for a screening of the documentary "Swift Current".  The city will also be announcing their new "Youth Certification and Safe Places" initiative.

After publicly revealing during his NHL career that he was sexually abused by a coach as a junior hockey player witth Switf Current Broncos, Kennedy has made raising funds and awareness for victims of abuse his life's mission.  He co-founded Respect Group Inc. in 2004 and originally gained great publicity for the cause by roller blading across Canada in 1998.

In 2006, Kennedy released his autobiography, "Why I Didn't Say Anything - The Sheldon Kennedy Story".  He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014.

Kennedy played in 310 NHL games over parts of eight seasons, scoring 49 goals and 58 assists.  He also represented Canada in the World Junior Championships in 1988 and 1989.
