Former Major League Standout Gary Matthews Keynotes Western Illinois Leadoff Dinner Next Month

The Leatherneck Baseball Sixth Annual Lead Off Dinner is welcoming an accomplished former major leaguer. Gary Matthews will speak at the event celebrating the Western Illinois program. 

The dinner takes place on January 28th at The Forum. Doors open and a silent auction begin at 3:30 p.m., dinner starts at 5 p.m. and the program commences at 5:30 p.m. 

There will also be a live auction after the event. Individual tickets are $70 for adults and $40 for children while tables of eight are $460. 

Matthews played 16 seasons with five franchises. He debuted with the San Francisco Giants in 1972 and won the National League Rookie of the Year award a year later. 

Matthews had his best season in 1979 when he made the All-Star team and hit .304 with 27 home runs and 90 RBI. He became a postseason hero later in his career with the Philadelphia Phillies and won the 1983 National League Championship Series. 

Matthews retired with over 2,000 career hits. In retirement, he has spent extensive time as a coach and a broadcaster.
