Former MLB Manager Lloyd McClendon Gives Commencement Speech at Alma Mater Valparaiso

Lloyd McClendon has had a career in baseball that spans four decades, but it has not always been easy.  McClendon was able to draw on those stories of perseverance as he delivered the commencement address at Valparaiso University this month.

He addressed the 243 graduates and encouraged them to never give up.  McClendon recounted how he fought through the shock of no longer being head and shoulders above his competition when drafted into pro baseball.

The Valpo alum also said what he learned at the school was pivotal to his future success.  It was a fun opportunity for reflection that is not often available while pursuing the daily grind of baseball glory.

McClendon most recently managed the Seattle Mariners for the past two seasons and compiled a 163-161 overall record.  In 2016, he will be the skipper of the Detroit Tigers' Triple A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens.

Prior to arriving in Seattle, McClendon spent eight seasons on Jim Leyland's Tigers coaching staff.  He originally started his coaching career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and managed the team for five seasons.

McClendon also had an eight year playing career with the Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and Cleveland Indians.  He originally gained notoreity as a star for the Gary, Indiana team that made it to the Little League World Series in 1971.
