Former NBA All-Star John Starks Named Speaker at Sixth Annual Sneaker Ball

Legendary New York Knicks guard John Starks will be speaking at the sixth annual Sneaker Ball in MTSU’s Student Union Building on April 16 at 7 p.m. The Sneaker Ball is a fundraising event to benefit the First Shot Basketball Foundation which is designed to build self-confidence, obstacle skills, and teach children how to work with one another effectively. Following this event there will also be a First Shot Basketball fundraiser golf tournament at the Champions Run Golf Course in Rockvale.

The current Fan Development Adviser and Alumni Relations Worker for the New York Knicks got his start in the NBA after he was not selected during the draft and decided to be a free agent. He was picked up by the Golden State Warriors in 1988 for a year before being cut and having to work hard to get back into the NBA. In 1990 Starks tried out for the New York Knicks only to be injured by Patrick Ewing, which led to the team being forced to keep him under their care until eventually he joined the playing squad.

During 1994 the Oklahoma native got the opportunity to play on the All-Star team, and he also participated in the 1992 Slam Dunk contest. During his time playing for the Knicks he was one of the most popular players in the league, and has overcome so many obstacles. When Starks attends the Sneaker Ball in a couple months to be the keynote speaker, he will without doubt share his story with the audience and hopefully inspire them to have the same adversity that he has had throughout his career.
