Former NBA Star Glen Rice Trains Basketball Players Back Home in Michigan

While his NBA playing days might be long past him, Glen Rice’s ability to influence a new generation of basketball players has not.  Rice returned home to Flint, Michigan last weekend for a trio of training sessions at Hill Road Hoops.

Six area kids ranging in age from 10-17 got hands-on instruction from the former NBA star for 75 minutes each day.  Glen Rice Basketball provides training like this all across the country, but this was the organization’s namesake’s first trip back to Flint.

Rice’s basketball prowess began in the city, where he won back-to-back state championships with Northwestern High School in the 1980s.  He then took his show up the road to Ann Arbor and led Michigan to a national title in 1989.

Following that season, Rice was the fourth overall pick of the Miami Heat and went on to prosper during a 15-year NBA career.  He was a three-time All-Star and scored over 18,000 points.

Rice’s best seasons came in 1997 and 1998 with the Charlotte Hornets.  In 1997, he was MVP of the All-Star Game and went on to All-NBA second team honors.

Rice also won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000.  In addition to running his training organization, he also watches his son, Glen Jr. play basketball professionally.
