Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue Speaks at Charity Event in New Orleans

On Thursday, August 22nd, former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue came back to a city that had been devastated just ten years ago.  Tagliabue was the speaker at the St. Jude Hospital’s Legends of Charity event in New Orleans.

He spoke about the impact of Hurricane Katrina and particularly the NFL’s involvement in concert with the New Orleans Saints to revive the city.  Tagliabue also supported the city’s bid to host the Super Bowl in 2020.

He also participated in a live Q&A.  Other football personalities in attendance included Saints owner Tom Benson, inspirational ALS fighter Steve Gleason, and legendary quarterback Archie Manning.

Tagliabue served as NFL commissioner from 1989-2006.  During that period of time, the league experienced unprecedented growth in almost every quantifiable area.

One of Tagliabue’s signature moments as commissioner was making sure the Saints returned to New Orleans following the aftermath of Katrina.  He also successfully guided the league through several expansion efforts and added four different franchises during his tenure.

Post-commissionership, Tagliabue rejoined the Washington D.C. law firm Covington & Burling where he had spent 20 years prior to joining the NFL full-time.  He was the Georgetown University board of directors chair as well from 2008 to 2015.
