Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson Headlines Basketball Clinic in South Dakota

This weekend, NBA Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson was able to join several sports stars for a good cause.  He was the headline guest at the basketball clinic for the HyVee/Sanford Legends event in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There were hundreds of kids on hand to learn from Sampson at the Sanford Pentagon.  Other athletes like NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin and former Minnesota Twins’ star Kent Hrbek are also lending a hand for additional clinics.

Sampson was a four-time All-Star.  The 7’4” center made an impact right away for the Houston Rockets winning the 1984 NBA Rookie of the Year.

He was best known for his time in Houston and averaged over 20 points and ten rebounds per game in each of his first three seasons.  Unfortunately, injuries would take their toll on Sampson and he would never play an entire 82 game season after that.

In 1985, he was All-Star Game MVP and made a game-winning shot that season to send the Rockets over the Lakers into the NBA Finals.  Sampson would also play for the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Bullets before leaving the NBA in 1991.

He mad just as significant an impact on the college game.  At Virginia, Sampson was a three-time National Player of the Year and led the Cavaliers to both an Elite Eight and a Final Four.

The former number one overall pick remains an active part of the NBA today.  Sampson is still an ambassador of the game as new generations of fans get to hear about his incredible accomplishments.
