Jen Welter Continues Pioneering Path as First Women to Coach in the NFL

With the recent success of Becky Hammon as a head coach in the NBA’s Summer League, the discussion about women coaching in male professional sports has been a huge talking point.  The Arizona Cardinals advanced those discussions on Monday by hiring Jen Welter as the first-known female coach in the NFL.

Welter will work as an intern with the Cardinals during training camp and the preseason.  She will focus specifically on the inside linebackers, a position she played professionally for 14 years.

There has been no shortage of trailblazing moments for Welter in the sports world.  Earlier this year, she became first woman to coach in any level of professional football when she joined the Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League as a linebackers and special teams coach.

In 2014, Welter suited up for the Revolution at running back, becoming the first woman to play a position other than kicker in a men’s pro football game.

Welter will rely on a deep background in the game in her new role with the Cardinals.  She led the Dallas Diamonds to four championships in the Women’s Football Alliance.

Welter also won gold medals with Team USA in 2010 and 2013 at the International Federation of American Football Women’s Championship.  As a winner at many levels, many see her as having the leadership skills necessary to succeed at the highest level.

In addition to her football experience, Welter also holds a master’s degree in sports psychology and a PhD in psychology.  Her athletic career originally started on the rugby fields and she played the sport collegiately at Boston College.
