Mississippi State Women’s Basketball Coach Vic Schaefer Keynotes Celebration of Excellence

The Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi brought in one of the state's new sports celebrities. Mississippi State women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer was the keynote speaker for their Celebration of Excellence on Tuesday.

The 29th annual event was held at the Tommy Dulaney Center in Meridian. There were almost 1,000 people that turned out to take part in the program.

Schaefer talked about the important role that the Boys and Girls Club played in the development of young people. He made the point to come back to speak off of a vacation with his son.

Schaefer became a household name in the state this past spring when his Bulldogs snapped UConn's 111-game winning streak and advanced to the national championship game. The program has made three straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

Schaefer originally became the head coach at MSU in 2012. He was a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year this year and the 2015 SEC Co-Coach of the Year.

Schaefer was the associate head coach at Texas A&M for a decade. He was also the head coach at Sam Houston State and had a long tenure as an assistant at Arkansas.
