Olympic Gold Medalist Jordyn Wieber Speaks Out for Assault Survivors

The sport of gymnastics has been in the news for the highly-publicized case of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. While it has brought the horrors of sexual assault to the forefront, several strong women have also become powerful advocates for support and change.

One of those people who testified in the case and has been a leading voice is Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber. She is using her platform to speak around the country and provide encouragement for others,

Wieber's next speaking engagement is this Thursday at Michigan State University. The event is titled "Jordyn Wieber: Moving Forward" and it is part of the school's Mental Health Awareness Week.

On April 27, Wieber will speak in Bakersfield, California, at the Alliance Against Family Violence & Sexual Assault's Power of the Purse event. At each event, she will share her story of survival in hopes of inspiring others.

Wieber was a member of the "Fierce Five" U.S. Olympic gymnastics team that won a team gold medal at the 2012 Games. She was also the individual all-around champion and contributed to another team gold at the 2011 World Championships.

Wieber began her senior gymnastics career with an appearance in the American Cup in 2011. That year she placed first at Nationals in the all-around, floor exercise and uneven bars.

Wieber was also a finalist for the James V. Sullivan Award in 2011. She retired from competition in 2015 and is currently an assistant gymnastics coach at UCLA.
