Retired Baseball Great Keith Hernandez Speaks at Drew University

Drew University got a visit from a noted former baseball star. Keith Hernandez participated in the Drew Forum In the Game lecture series that brings sports celebrities to campus. 

Many New York Mets fans were in the audience on Tuesday at the school located in Madison, New Jersey. Hernandez was interviewed by New York Times sportswriter Ira Berkow. 

He was able to cover his playing career and the state of the game today. Prior to the conversation, he met with members of the Drew baseball team. 

Hernandez is one of the great defensive first basemen of all-time, winning 11 Gold Gloves during his career. He was also a skilled hitter, collecting over 2,000 hits and batting .296 over 17 seasons. 

Hernandez began his career with the St. Louis Cardinals and was named National League Most Valuable Player of the Year in 1979 after leading the league with a .344 batting average. He went on to pick up four of his five All-Star nominations with the New York Mets. 

Hernandez also helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series. He currently serves as a television broadcaster for the Mets and is a studio analyst for MLB on FOX.
