Scott Skiles Named New Orlando Magic Head Coach

People often go home in the sports world.  On Friday, Scott Skiles returned to the organization that helped launch his NBA playing career.

Now, Skiles will be tasked with turning around a young roster as the head coach of the Orlando Magic.  He is 443-433 in 13 seasons as an NBA head coach with the Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls, and Milwaukee Bucks.

Despite a 25-57 record during the 2014-15 season, there is hope for Skiles to turn the Magic around.  He remarked at his introductory press conference that there is potential for the Elfrid Payton-Victor Oladipo backcourt to be one of the league’s top five defensive units.

Skiles knows a little big about grit and tenacity on the court too.  He was in Orlando for five of his ten seasons and became an early fan favorite for the expansion franchise.

With 30 assists in a 1990 game against the Denver Nuggets, Skiles set an NBA single-game record.  That season also netted him NBA Most Improved honors.

Skiles first broke onto the scene as an All-American at Michigan State.  He left the Spartans as their all-time career leading scorer and still holds the single-season scoring record.
