Toronto Raptors Guard Fred VanVleet Becomes Tourism Ambassador for Hometown

Former college basketball star Fred VanVleet has made it big with an NBA contract. Now, his hometown is using him to drum up interest in their sports scene. 

VanVleet is the first sports ambassador for Rockford, Illinois. He is working with the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau to bring more amateur athletes and tournaments to the city. 

They have launched the Bring Your Game 2 Rockford campaign. VanVleet's story will be featured in print, video and online advertisements durign the yearlong agreement. 

VanVleet was signed this summer as an undrafted free agent by the Toronto Raptors. So far, he has seen action in four games while also splitting time between their NBA Development League affiliate, Raptors 905. 

During his collegiate career, VanVleet was one of the top players in the country at Wichita State. He was a three-time Associated Press honorable mention All-American and two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. 

As a freshman, VanVleet helped the Shockers reach the Final Four and the following year they had an undefeated regular season. He left school as the program career leader in assists.
