UFC Fighter Corey Anderson Speaks at Sport Stories Event in Hometown

UFC fighter Corey Anderson has remained true to his Rockford, Illinois roots. He was a keynote speaker in town Thursday at a Sports Stories event held at Veterans Memorial Arena.

Anderson came together with other local sports stars like Golden Gloves boxing champion Angel Martinez, Toronto Raptors guard Fred Van Vleet and NJCAA Division III coach Misty Opat. He was able to talk about his unique road to sporting excellence.

Anderson also talked about the dedication it takes now to get to the top of the UFC. He is bullish about the potential for sports in Rockville and discussed some of the steps the city has taken to foster an active community.

Anderson is currently sixth in the UFC light heavyweight rankings. After winning his first three professional fights, he got a big break as part of the cast for the 19th season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2014.

In the finale of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Edgar vs. Team Penn, Anderson defeated Matt Van Buren via first round TKO. It was the quickest finish to a finale night fight in the history of the show.

Arguably the biggest win of Anderson's career came at UFC 196 over Tom Lawler. He lost his last decision to Jimi Manuwa at UFC Fight Night in London in March and is currently 9-3 as a pro.
