World Series-Winning Manager Joe Maddon Makes Hometown Appearance

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon has spent a lifetime reinvesting into his hometown of Hazelton, Pennsylvania. Yesterday, he was there helping open a new playground at the Hazelton One Community Center.

Maddon got to cut the ribbon that signified the official opening of the playground. He spoke about working on a city playground and talked about growing up in Hazelton.

Maddon is the founder of the Community Center and holds several events each year to raise funds for it. Due to the Cubs off day between series with the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates, Maddon was able to make the visit.

Last season, Maddon helped lead Chicago to their first World Series title since 1908. During his first year with the Cubs, he was the 2015 National League Manager of the Year and led the franchise to the National League Championship Series.

Maddon gained great acclaim in baseball circles while managing the Tampa Bay Rays from 2006-14. He turned around the moribund franchise and reached the 2008 World Series.

Maddon led the Rays to four playoff appearances overall and was named American League Manager of the Year twice. He built a reputation in coaching circles as part of the Anaheim Angels staff from 1993-2005.
