Ben McDonald pitched in the major leagues with the Baltimore Orioles from 1989 to 1995 and Milwaukee Brewers from 1996 to 1997.  Prior to heading to pro ball he played at Louisiana State University and helped the Tigers to the College World Series in consecutive seasons.  In 1989 he posted a career best 14-4 record with a 3.49 ERA and an SEC single-season record 202 strikeouts.  After that season he earned First-Team All-American honors and was presented the Golden Spikes Award as the nation’s top amateur baseball player.  While playing at LSU he also represented the United States on the national team and helped the USA to a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.  In the 1989 MLB First-Year Player Draft the Baltimore Orioles selected him with the No. 1 overall pick.  During his MLB career he was a consistent performer, posting a career record of 78-70 and a 3.91 ERA in 1,291.1 innings pitched.  Since his retirement he has been inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame.  During the NCAA Tournament he serves as a color analyst for ESPN, and also continues to coach and mentor young baseball players around the country.
