Brent Sutter Biography

Brent Sutter is a former NHL centre and head coach who last served as the head coach of the Calgary Flames in 2012. Prior to becoming a coach, Sutter was a centre in the NHL, playing 18 seasons with the New York Islanders and the Chicago Blackhawks. Sutter played 1111 regular season games over his career, finishing with 829 points as well as 74 points in 144 playoff appearances. Following his retirement in 1998, Sutter pursued a career in coaching, leading the Canadian Junior ice hockey team to consecutive gold medals at the 2005 and 2006 World Championships. His first professional head coaching job came with the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL, coaching the team for seven seasons before leaving to get his first NHL coaching job with the New Jersey Devils. Sutter led the Devils to their best record in franchise history in 2009, but he stepped down after the season citing family reasons. Two weeks later, Sutter was announced as the head coach of the Calgary Flames, but his contract was not renewed after three straight seasons of missing the playoffs.
