Dan Bylsma Biography

Dan Bylsma is a former NHL right wing and head coach who last coached with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Bylsma got his start as a player in college with Bowling Green University. At Bowling Green, Bylsma played four seasons, scoring 37 goals and 87 points in 155 games played. Despite being drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1989 NHL Draft, Bylsma didn’t make his NHL debut until 1995 with the Los Angeles Kings. Bylsma would bounce between the lower leagues and the NHL throughout his career, and he never was able to break into a main role with any team. In 2000, Bylsma got another chance with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, playing with the team for four seasons before retiring in 2004 due to lingering injuries. Following his retirement, Bylsma decided to pursue coaching, initially becoming an assistant with the Ducks’ AHL affiliate and the New York Islanders. In 2008, Bylsma was hired to become the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ AHL affiliate, and was eventually promoted to the head coaching role of the NHL team. In six seasons at the helm, Bylsma recorded a 252-117 record, leading the Penguins to the Playoffs every year and winning the Stanley Cup in 2009. He is currently an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings.
