Fernando Valenzuela Biography

Not many players have made an entrance into Major League Baseball like Fernando Valenzuela.  Valenzuela drew massive attention as a 20-year-old rookie for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981, inciting “Fernandomania”.  He is the only player in baseball history to win the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award in the same year.  Valenzuela won his first eight decisions and the Dodgers captured the World Series title.  The first decade of his career was spent in Los Angeles and he made six All-Star trips during the 1980s.  He was also known as an unusually good hitting pitcher and won two Silver Slugger Awards.  Following the 1990 season, Valenzuela would pitch for five other clubs and achieve moderate success. He has been with the Dodgers organization since retirement, serving as an analyst on their Spanish broadcasts.  Valenzuela has also coached Team Mexico in each World Baseball Classic.  He is a member of the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and the Caribbean Baseball Halls of Fame.
