Lindy Ruff Biography

Lindy Ruff played 13 seasons in the NHL from with the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers 1979 to 1991. Ruff got his start in professional hockey after being selected with the 32nd overall pick by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. During his time in the league he was one of the top defenseman, playing stellar defense and adding 105 goals and 195 assists for a total of 300 points in 691 career games. He also added 11 goals and 13 assists for a total of 24 points in 52 career playoff games. After his retirement he pursued a successful career in coaching and was named the manager of the Buffalo Sabres in 1997. During his first 15 seasons as the manager of the Sabres he led his teams to nine playoff appearances, 581 wins and two Northeast Division titles. During his second season at the helm he led the Sabres to the Stanley Cup Finals with a 14-7 playoff record. Ruff was hired as the head coach o the Dallas Stars in 2013 and led them to a 40-win season in his first year. To date, he is one of only 16 coaches in NHL history to win over 600 games, and only the second coach in history to win 500 games with one team.
