Luis Aparicio Biography

Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio stood out as a dominant shortstop during his 18 year career.  Aparicio was best known for his early years with the Chicago White Sox.  A ten-time All-Star, he went to the World Series with the “Go Go White Sox” in 1959 and won a championship with the Baltimore Orioles in 1966.  His speed and defense were highly valued.  Aparicio won nine Gold Gloves and led the American League in stolen bases each of his first nine years.  He was the first Venezuelan to ever be elected to the Hall.  A statue of Aparicio stands at U.S. Cellular Field and his number was retired by the White Sox.  In 1999, he was one of 100 nominees for the All-Century Team.  He is also a member of the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame and Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame.   Aparicio’s father was a noted Venezuelan pro shortstop and team owner.
