Mickey Lolich Biography

Mickey Lolich pitched in the big leagues for 17 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets and San Diego Padres from 1963 to 1979. Lolich got his start in professional baseball after being signed as an amateur free agent by the Detroit Tigers in 1958. After making his MLB debut in 1963 he posted an 18-9 overall record in 1964 and went on to win 14 or more wins in 12 consecutive seasons from 1964 to 1975. During that time he earned three all-star selections and finished in the top three of the Cy Young voting twice in 1971 and 1972 as a 20 game winner. In 1971 he posted a 25-14 record in 45 starts and posted a sparkling 2.92 ERA while leading the American League with 308 strikeouts and 376 innings pitched. He followed that up by winning 22 games in 1972 with a career low 2.50 ERA. In 1968 Lolich reached the pinnacle of his major league career when he helped the Tigers to a World Series title. Lolich joined the Mets in 1976 and went on to retire with the San Diego Padres in 1979. He retired as the American League record holder for most strikeouts in history by a left hander with 2,679.
