Paul Maurice Biography

Paul Maurice is a long-tenured coach who currently is the head coach of the Florida Panthers. Maurice has had a great deal of success with four different NHL franchises, most recently taking the eighth-seeded Panthers to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final. Maurice got his first shot as a head coach with the Hartford Whalers in 1995. He followed the franchise to Carolina when they became the Hurricanes and produced results. They made the playoffs three times in their first five years in Raleigh, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2002. Maurice had a brief stint heading the Toronto Maple Leafs before returning to Carolina and making a trip to the Conference Finals in his first year back in 2009. Prior to arriving with the Panthers, he coached the Winnipeg Jets for nine seasons, making five postseason appearances.

Prior to his coaching career, Maurice was a professional player, playing for the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL from 1984 to 1988. Maurice scored would go on to score 40 goals in 189 games, and was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1985 NHL Draft, but would never make it to the NHL. After his retirement as a player in 1988, Maurice became an assistant coach for the Spitfires, leaving the team in 1990 to serve as an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings.
