Greenville Holds Community Farewell For Former ECU Football Coach Ruffin McNeill

When a school fires their head football coach, it is usually met with approval from a fan base looking for a new direction and greater levels of success.  The way East Carolina football fans met the parting of ways with Ruffin McNeill just shows you the unordinary respect they have for their former coach.

This past Friday, a community farewell was organized for McNeill in Greenville, North Carolina at the Greenville Convention Center.  "A Heartfelt Well Done" was the title of the event that paid respect to the man that led ECU for six years.

In addition to appearing to be recognized, McNeill also signed copies of his book, "A Little Pirate's ABCs", and did a final media session.  There was also a free reception from 6-7:30 p.m.

After hearing the news of his fate at ECU, McNeill quickly scored a new role as assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach on new Virginia head coach Bronco Medenhall's staff.  It was just another sign of admiration for a man deeply respected throughout the coaching profession.

McNeill, also an ECU alum, compiled a 42-34 record during his run with the Pirates.  The program went to four bowl games and had a 30-18 mark in Conference USA and American Athletic Conference games.

Prior to arriving back in Greenville, McNeill had a decade-long run on MIke Leach's Texas Tech staff.  He originally started his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Clemson in 1985.
