With seven NBA championships under his belt, Robert Horry is one of the greatest winners in sports history. He also knows how difficult it is to achieve success, a message he tried to hammer home as the guest speaker at the Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club.
“It’s about making sacrifices in life,” said Horry. “Whether you are a doctor or lawyer or basketball player or a football player, you have to make sacrifices to get good at your craft."
The crowd on Tuesday at Oakmont Country Club was ecstatic to hear from someone as accomplished as Horry. He also made it a point to preach how important his mentors were, starting with his youth coaches all the way to the veterans he played with when he first entered the NBA.
Horry gave some advice to parents of student-athletes in the crowd as well. He talked about helping his son Camron, who is a tight end at Texas A&M, become a well-rounded person.
“It’s also about preparing for life after football and the connections you make, said Horry. "In football, concussions happen. You just keep your fingers crossed that it doesn’t happen.”
Due to his wealth of experience as a high-caliber player and as a parent, Horry is a great keynote speaker for a variety of functions, including corporate events and school banquets. His championship pedigree includes two title wins with the Houston Rockets, three with the Los Angeles Lakers and two more with the San Antonio Spurs.
All along the way, Horry earned the reputation as "Big Shot Bob" for his ability to deliver in clutch moments. He previously held the record for three-pointers made in the NBA Finals history and still holds the top mark for threes made in one NBA Playoffs game with seven.
Horry currently lives in Los Angeles and commentates on games for Spectrum SportsNet. He is a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame due to his storied prep career and college success at the University of Alabama.
