Gamers rushing to the stores on Tuesday to pick up copies of FIFA 16 were greeted by familiar faces on the cover. On the U.S. edition, international star Messi was joined by American women’s soccer standout Alex Morgan.
Morgan’s inclusion on the cover is groundbreaking for a game that is including the women’s national teams for the first time. Worldwide, the FIFA video game series is the top selling sports franchise.
Messi is a four-time winner of the Ballon d’Or. He has dominated La Liga for Barcelona, holding records for most goals in a career and single-season.
With Messi at the helm, Barcelona has won seven La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League crowns. Most recently, the Argentinian has experienced great success playing internationally, with his home country reaching the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa America finals.
Due to her rapid rise with the national team, a generation of girls will try to emulate Morgan. After helping the U.S. to gold at the 2012 Olympics, she was a finalist for FIFA World Player of the Year at the age of 22.
To date, Morgan has totaled 54 goals in international play and is fresh off winning this summer’s World Cup. Since 2013, she has also played professionally for the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League.
