From his time as a star with the Montreal Expos, Andre Dawson has quite the following throughout Canada. On Thursday, he spoke at a fundraiser for the independent league Winnipeg Goldeyes.
The "Grazing in the Outfield" event took place at Shaw Park. While people were enjoying the opportunity to eat on the baseball diamond, there were cows on hand as well.
The fundraiser benefited the Goldeyes' Field of Dreams Foundation. Dawson was able to share fun stories from his baseball career and fans flocked to him everywhere he went in the city.
Dawson played 21 seasons in the major leagues and was an eight-time All-Star. He spent the first decade-plus of his career with the Montreal Expos and was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1977.
After joining the Chicago Cubs in 1987, Dawson hit a league-leading 49 home runs and 137 RBI on the way to winning NL MVP. He is one of eight players in MLB history to hit over 300 homers and collect over 300 stolen bases.
Dawson was also a standout fielder early in his career and he won eight Gold Gloves. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
