Baseball keynote speaker Cal Ripken Jr. appeared during a general session at Encore at Wynn as the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) Joint Annual Convention was held. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association and the Portland Cement Association also collaborated on the event
Reflecting on his 2,632 consecutive games played streak, Ripken offered up eight traits that a ballplayer must possess to break his “Iron Man” record. But these traits, he emphasized, are not just applicable to baseball players.
“All this means is you have to have the right attitude about your job,” Ripken said. “No matter what job you’re in.”
One of the eight traits Ripken suggested the next “Iron Man” must possess is the right approach, meaning a positive attitude toward work.
“The right approach…starts with the way you think about your job,” he said. “You have to have the right attitude. You have to have the right approach. And if you have the right approach, everything else will take care of itself.”
Another trait that Ripken identified was the need for a strong will to succeed, a passion for one’s work, and a love of competition.
“What are some of the things in your life that can make you feel the same way you did when you first came in? What are some of the things that you can think about that will get your juices flowing?” he said. “That was very motivating for me.”
Ripken also emphasized the importance of consistency, strength, conviction, and life management.
“All [conviction] means is there are certain times of your life when you have to stand up for what you believe in,” he said. “This is all about control. How do you gain control?” Ripken added.
In addition to sharing strategies for success, Ripken also showed what makes him a top baseball keynote speaker by telling stories from his playing days and offered his perspective on the current state of Major League Baseball.
The convention allowed attendees to hear from a true legend in the world of sports. However, Ripken’s message resonated beyond just baseball. His words served as a reminder of the importance of having the right mindset and attitude in any profession and that anyone can achieve success with the right approach, passion, consistency, conviction, and life management.
