Whether it was his teammates or leagues of baseball fans, Johnny Bench has entertained and inspired the masses over the years. Bench was back at it again Tuesday at the keynote speaker at the International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition and Conference breakfast.
Bench spoke to the group assembled at IBEX 2015 in Louisville. His speech was built on the “Vowels of Success”.
Those vowels included Atttitude; Effort for Excellence; No I in Team; and Using Knowledge.
There was plenty to draw on from a legendary 17-year Hall of Fame baseball career. Bench was a 14-time All-Star for the Cincinnati Reds and considered one of the finest defensive catchers of all-time.
His ten Gold Gloves rank second at the position in the history of the game to Ivan Rodriguez. Bench powered legendary “Big Red Machine” teams of the 1970s in Cincinnati and won two National League Most Valuable Player awards.
With his steadying influence behind the plate, the Reds won back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976. Bench has gone on in retirement to be one of the game’s best ambassadors and was recently recognized during All-Star festivities as one of the four greatest players living today as part of Major League Baseball’s “Franchise Four” initiative.
