Anyone who followed the career of Pedro Martinez knew his Hall of Fame speech would be appointment viewing. The always-colorful Martinez spoke from his heart about his journey from the Dominican Republic to the greatest honor in baseball.
He was the last of the four players being inducted to speak and certainly moved the estimated 45,000 fans in attendance. In his 30-plus minute speech, Martinez made sure to also thank all the people that helped pave his path towards success.
The celebration around the pitching legend will continue Tuesday when his number is officially retired at Fenway Park. It was certainly with the Boston Red Sox that Martinez made his biggest impact.
He pitched seven of his 18 seasons in Boston and went 117-37, compiling the highest winning percentage any pitcher has had with one team in baseball history. In 2004, Martinez also helped the Red Sox win their first World Series 86 years.
Overall, the eight-time All-Star finished his career an impressive 219-100 with 3,154 strikeouts and a 2.93 ERA. Martinez was also a three-time Cy Young winner, led the MLB in ERA five times, and paced the American League in strikeouts on three occasions.
Martinez still stays active in baseball today. He is a special assistant to Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington and works as an analyst for MLB Network.
