Charles Barkley may have starred on the hardcourt for rival Auburn, but on Tuesday he paid a visit to the football team at Alabama. He was the latest guest speaker brought in to speak at the Mal M. Moore Football Facility.
Barkley spoke to the team prior to their night practice, but did not stay to watch the Crimson Tide workout. He has long held respect for Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
Several other athletes like Jay Williams, Ryan Leaf and Marcus Spears have spoken to the team this preseason. Barkley was undoubtedly able to provide some sound advice as the Tide get ready to open the season against Florida State in Atlanta.
After being an All-American at Auburn, Barkley was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the fifth overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft. He went on to become an 11-time All-Star and five-time member of the All-NBA first-team.
Barkley joined the Phoenix Suns in 1992 and subsequently won the NBA MVP award in his first season. That year, he also helped the franchise reach the NBA Finals.
Barkley was also on two gold medal winning Team USA squads at the Olympics. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 and remains an influential part of the game as a popular commentator on TNT's Inside the NBA.
