Bill Cowher headed to upstate New York last month to contribute to a good cause at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. He was the keynote speaker at the Compeer Ben R. Giambrone Rochester Sports Luncheon.
Compeer is an organization helps young people and adults living with mental health issues by putting them together with community volunteers. Cowher was able to tie the ethos of the organization into his presentation, centering his talk around friendship and companionship.
Cowher was able to speak plenty about his football journey and share anecdotes that could apply to a variety of industries. He also talked about how important it is to have a set plan for doing things.
“Respect for co-workers, understanding their needs, knowledge of your product. And it takes time. It’s a process,’’ Cowher said. “Don’t focus on results, the focus is on the process. Winning and results are byproducts of the process. So, you say, what is the process? To me it’s a mindset.’’
Cowher's teams won eight division titles and made ten playoff appearances in 15 seasons as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach. The Steelers made two Super Bowl trips under his watch, winning one.
Cowher was the AP's NFL Coach of the Year in 1992 and a two-time Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year. He was just the second coach in league history to make the postseason in his first six seasons.
Cowher now serves as an analyst for CBS Sports and "The NFL Today." He is a member of the Pittsburgh Pro Football Hall of Fame.
