Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross ended his career last night like many kids draw it up in their backyards growing up. He went out on top with the Cubs winning their first World Series since 1908.
Not only did Ross' finish with a title, he was a key contributor in the Game 7 win. He was forced into action in the bottom of the fifth when starter Jon Lester came on in relief and delivered in a big way.
Ross hit a home run in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 6-3 and stayed on until the top of the ninth when he was replaced by a pinch runner. He was then able to watch from the bench as the Cubs took control and won 8-7 in 10 innings.
As the oldest player on a relatively young team, Ross has been the emotional leader for a Cubs squad that won 103 games during the regular season. This is his second championship after winning the World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2013.
Ross played 15 big league seasons and spent time with seven different franchises. He originally debuted with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 and played for seven playoff teams.
The Dodgers selected Ross in the seventh round of the 1998 MLB Draft. He had already proven to have a knack for winning, making it to the College World Series with both Auburn and Florida.
