Last weekend, the Cleveland Cavaliers trip to New York gave J.R. Smith the perfect opportunity to give back. He hosted the first annual casino night for the J.R. Smith Youth Foundation at Stage 48.
Sports stars like his Cavs teammate Iman Shumpert and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz turned out to the event. Attendees received $300 in gaming fun money at the black tie shindig.
There was also a magic show, silent auction, and a gifting suite. $45,000 was raised for Smith's foundation.
Smith was just getting started with the charitable occasions however. He hosted his first Bowling Night back in Cleveland on Wednesday and will put on his 10th annual golf tournament in the summer back in his hometown.
Since arriving with the Cavs, Smith has become a valuable piece of a championship-contending team. After being acquired midway through last season, he has averaged 12 points a game and is a reliable three-point shooter.
Smith had spent the previous three and a half seasons with the New York Knicks. He had his best year as a pro with the Knicks, averaging 18.1 points a game off the bench in 2012-13 on the way to NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors.
The New Orleans Hornets originally selected Smith out of high school in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft. He played a pair of seasons in New Orleans, before joining a Denver Nuggets team that made the postseason in each of his five seasons with the club.
