Every team has at least one off-the-wall pitcher and Bill Lee fit the bill better than most during his major league career. With colorful stories to tell, Lee speaks at the Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Dinner tomorrow night.
The dinner will be held at the La Quinta Hotel Ballroom in Springfield, Massachusetts from 6-10 p.m. Individual tickets cost $45 while a table of eight runs $320.
Former MLB pitcher Mike Trombley is a charter member of the Western Massachusetts Baseball Hall of Fame committee and he contacted Lee to make the appearance. Seven individuals will be enshrined this year, including the late great baseball manager Leo Durocher.
Lee is well known to those in the state after spending ten of his 14 big league seasons with the Boston Red Sox. He put together three straight 17-win seasons for the club and helped them win the American League pennant in 1975.
Lee was also an All-Star in 1973, finishing the season with a 17-11 record and a 2.95 ERA. In 2008, he was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame.
The man nicknamed "Spaceman" has a legacy that extends far beyond his on-field accomplishments however. Lee was known throughout his career for outspoken commentary and has authored four books.
