While most of the standouts from his NBA Draft class have already inked lucrative shoe and apparel endorsement deals, Dennis Smith Jr. decided to wait and weigh his options. It paid off for Smith when he agreed to a partnership with Under Armour this week.
Under Armour plans to immediately make him one of their featured basketball players. Smith's breakout performance at the Las Vegas NBA Summer League certainly helped the negotiating power he came to the table with.
The Smith-Under Armour presence will be particularly strong in Dallas, where UA has one of their Brand House stores. He will factor prominently into in-store marketing and participate in special product launches.
The Mavericks were able to see immediate success for the player they selected ninth overall this summer. Smith averaged 17.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in Vegas and was named to the All-NBA Summer League first team.
Smith spent one season at NC State and averaged 18.1 points per game. He was named the ACC Rookie of the Year and an All-ACC second-team pick.
In January, Smith recorded a career-high 32 points and helped lead the Wolfpack to their first win over Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1995. During the season, he also became the first player in conference history to record two triple-doubles in league play.
Smith is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina who attended Trinity Christian School. As a junior, he was the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.
