Dan O'Brien Speaks to Duluth-Area Middle Schoolers

Former Olympic star Dan O’Brien was the featured speaker for the Essentia Health Fit-N-Fun Middle School Assemblies series in Duluth, Minnesota.  O’Brien shared his inspirational message at various middle schools this week following the May 20th run.

The Fit-N-Fun initiative was originally established in 2008 and each year 2,000 elementary students take to the Duluth Public Schools track.  It is a lead-up event for June’s Grandma’s Marathon that attracts 18,000 runners and has been around since 1977.

O’Brien is someone uniquely qualified to speak at the series.  He originally rose to fame through an ad campaign that was part of the lead-up to the 1992 Olympics.

However, O’Brien suffered a devastating result in the pole vault qualifying portion of the decathlon and would not medal.  His story of perseverance was made real in 1996 when he battled back to capture the gold and the unofficial title of “world’s greatest athlete”.

O’Brien also overcame struggles in school, depression, and substance abuse issues to become a world-class sportsman.  He is a member of the United States Olympic Hall of Fame and continues to stay active in the sport as a coach, broadcaster, and emcee.
