With ESPN being one of the most successful media companies in the world, plenty of people want to hear stories from the inside that lay out what makes them a success. There are not many people better able to speak about the network’s past, present, and future than longtime broadcaster Chris Berman.
Berman did just that as the final speaker in a series at Broward College in South Florida. He shared with the audience the history of the once smalltime cable industry and ESPN’s rise along with it.
Berman’s career has paralleled ESPN’s improbable ascent. He joined in 1979 a month after it was founded and has stayed a vital face ever since.
Today, he is most associated with his roles as host of Sunday NFL Countdown and the NFL Draft. Berman has held both roles since 1985.
In addition, he still hosts special editions of SportsCenter. Berman has also often covered baseball and still calls the Home Run Derby during the All-Star festivities.
He has been the National Sportscaster of the Year six times. Select catchphrases like “He could…go…all…the…way” and “Back, back, back, back” have become almost as iconic as Berman.
Fittingly, Berman is a Connecticut native and he attended Brown University. His career also started in local TV in Hartford before moving over to ESPN in Bristol.
