Ex-Boston Red Sox Star Jason Varitek Speaks at Portland Sea Dogs Hot Stove Dinner

With the Portland Sea Dogs being a minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, it made perfect sense for them to bring in one of the team's former stars to speak at their Hot Stove Dinner. Jason Varitek was the headline guest at Friday's event.

The dinner was held at 5:30 p.m. at the Sable Oaks Marriott. Proceeds benefited the Sea Dogs charity, Stirke Out Cancer in Kids.

Strike Out Cancer in Kids began in 1995 and it directly funds the Maine Children's Cancer Program. Each attendee also received a signed Jason Varitek 8x10.

Varitek played his entire 15-year career with the Red Sox. He was a three-time American League All-Star and won two World Series titles as team captain.

In 2005, Varitek won both a Silver Slugger award and Gold Glove for his work behind the plate. He originally made his major league debut with Boston in 1997 after a career as a three-time All-American at Georgia Tech.

Varitek is the only played to have his number retired by the Yellow Jackets. He is also a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame and now serves as a special assistant to the organization.
