Last weekend, one of the most underappreciated stars of baseball in recent memory finally got some due. The Seattle Mariners honored former pitcher Jamie Moyer with induction into the team’s hall of fame.
He was just the ninth former player to receive the distinction. 39,132 adoring fans were able to witness and cheer on Moyer’s moment.
Moyer spoke for 17 minutes to the crowd, reminiscing about his career and taking in the achievement. He highlighted his ingenuity on the mound for helping take him this far.
“My career is about three things,” Moyer said per the Seattle Times. “Making the most of whatever talents you have, ignoring skeptics and finding the right people in your life. I’ve never had Randy’s 100 mph fastball. Heck, I barely had an 80 mph fastball. I had to learn other ways to compete. I had to find other ways to win. It made me a better pitcher and in the end, it made me the person that I am.”
Moyer became an unlikely star in Seattle, winning 20 games twice and still holding the franchise’s all-time wins record with 145. He spent 11 of his 25 seasons in Seattle.
During one of those 20-win seasons, Moyer was elected to his only All-Star team. He also would leave the Mariners and go on to win a World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Even at the age of 49, he was still going strong, becoming the oldest pitcher in MLB history to win a game. Moyer retired 269-209 with a 4.25 ERA and 2,441 strikeouts.
He will also be forever remembered in Seattle for his charitable contributions. The Moyer Foundation still continues today helping children in distress.
