First Legally Deaf NHL Player Jim Kyte Speaks at Quota International of Ottawa Dinner

Last Monday night, former NHL player Jim Kyte got to give back to his community in a unique way.  He was the guest speaker at Quota International of Ottawa's 70th anniversary celebration.

The dinner was hosted at Algonquin College's Restaurant International.  Kyte talked about his unique life story with the 90 attendees.

He also shared a motivational message centered on what he called the "five Ps": perspiration, preparation, positive attitude, perseverance and passion.  In addition to his presentation, 70 teddy bears were donated by the group to the local Children's Aid Foundation.

Kyte made NHL history in 1982 by becoming the first legally deaf person to compete in the league.  After being the 12th overall pick in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, he spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Winipeg Jets.

Kyte also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks.  Overall, he played 598 NHL games.

In retirement, Kyte has found great success in the academic world.  He founded Algonquin College's Sports Business Management program and currently serves as Dean of the School of Hospitality and Tourism.
