This past Saturday, one of the most popular athletes in the history of Miami sports made a local appearance. Former University of Miami and Florida Marlins catcher Charles Johnson was at the Miami FanWear shop in Davie, Florida.
Johnson was on hand from 3-6 p.m. There were photos and mini helmets available for purchase for him to sign.
In addition, they gave away sample bottles of Johnson's "Catch This" barbeque sauce. The store also raffled off a signed catchers vest from the former big leaguer.
Johnson was one of the Marlins early stars, making two All-Star squads while playing for the franchise from 1994-98 and 2001-02. He won five consecutive Gold Gloves from 1995-1998 as well.
In 1997, Johnson went 123 games behind the plate without committing an error. Then, he hit .357 with a team-high ten hits as Florida captured the World Series in seven games over the Cleveland Indians.
Johnson played for five other franchises in his career as well. The Marlins originally selected him in the first round of the 1992 MLB Draft.
