Illinois native and former major league catcher Darrin Fletcher recently had a speaking engagement in his home state. He gave the keynote address at the Danville Area Community College's Phi Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society induction.
Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is primarily based on academic achievement and they are the largest honor society for higher education in America. They have recognized students at DACC since 1918.
At the ceremony, 22 new members were inducted. Fletcher was able to give a powerful speech and share some fun anecdotes from his baseball career as well.
Fletcher attended the University of Illinois and was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round of the 1987 MLB Draft. He debuted for the Dodgers in 1989 and played sparingly over two seasons before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Fletcher truly found a home in the big leagues when he was acquired by the Montreal Expos in 1991. He went on to make his first and only All-Star team in 1994.
Fletcher had banner seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, hitting .291 with 18 home runs and 80 RBI in 1999 and .320 with 20 home runs and 58 RBI in 2000. He retired in 2002 and has occasionally provided commentary for Blue Jays games on Rogers Sportsnet.
