College baseball season starts this week and several events around the country in the last few weeks got fans excited about their teams. Mercer University had an evening like this that featured former All-Star Mark Teixeira as guest speaker.
The 10th annual First Base Classic was held on January 30th. Approximately 600 people turned out to hear from Teixeira and get in line for an autograph session.
The attendance number marked the largest showing in event history. Teixeira shared stories from his career, lessons he has learned and thoughts on his life after baseball.
Over his 14-year playing career, Teixeira hit 409 home runs and collected 1,298 RBI. He was a three-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger Award winner.
Teixeira spent the first five seasons of his career with the Texas Rangers and hit a career-high 43 home runs and 144 RBI in 2005. He led the American League in home runs and RBI in 2009 while helping the New York Yankees win the World Series.
Texeira was also a great defensive first baseman and won five Gold Gloves. He retired after the 2016 season and is currently a baseball analyst for ESPN.
