Former baseball great Darryl Strawberry has dealt with the effects of mental illness first hand. He was able to talk about his experiences at the Community Alliance’s Holland Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Strawberry spoke at the organization’s “Breaking the Silence” event on Wednesday. There were about 200 people in attendance who are recovering from various forms of mental illness.
Strawberry said that no matter what has happened in one’s life, healing is possible. He was the latest in a long list of sports celebrities who have spoken to the Community Alliance.
Strawberry had a 17-year career in Major League Baseball and was an eight-time All-Star. He came up with the New York Mets in 1983 and went on to win National League Rookie of the Year honors.
Strawberry was one of the game’s most feared hitters throughout the 1980s and helped lead the Mets to a World Series in 1986. He led the NL in home runs in 1988 and finished runner-up in MVP voting.
Strawberry went on to win three more World Series titles with the New York Yankees later in his career. Despite battling his own substance abuse and mental health issues throughout the years, he turned his life around and helps others do the same today as an ordained minister.
