Former Big League Pitcher Dave Dravecky Keynotes UC Merced Fundraiser Tommorow

UC Merced is holding their Building Future Champions Dinner & Auction next month. Former major league pitcher Dave Dravecky is serving as keynote speaker.

The event takes place Thursday at 6 p.m. at Turlock Country Club. In tandem with the dinner, UC Merced is also hosting the 20th Annual Ma Kelley Memorial Golf Tournament the following day.

Each event benefits UC Merced athletics. Individual tickets for the dinner are $60 and a spot in the golf tournament costs $150.

Dravecky spent eight years as a big league pitcher, posting a 64-57 record with a 3.13 ERA. He is best known for how his career ended, however.

After finding a cancerous tumor in his pitching arm, Dravecky had to undergo surgery to remove a large part of the muscle in that arm. He still fought to return to the game he loved. Ten months later he was back on the mound and won a start before breaking his arm.

Cancer was found again in the arm and Dravecky had to have it amputated. He now speaks about his transition away from baseball and serves as an ambassador for the San Francisco Giants.
