Former College Football Head Coach Fred Goldsmith Speaks at YMCA Prayer Breakfast

Former college football head coach Fred Goldsmith experienced his greatest career success in North Carolina at Duke University. He has since called the state home and last Wednesday spoke at an in-state YMCA Prayer Breakfast.

Goldsmith was on hand for the 18th annual event that was held in downtown Lincolnton. While it originally drew around 30 people, the breakfast now welcomes crowds of over 300 each year.

Goldsmith shared several stories from his football career and also talked at length about his faith. There were also multiple awards handed out to members of the community.

In his first season at Duke in 1994, Goldsmith led the team to an 8-4 record and appearance in the Hall of Fame Bowl. He was named the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year and the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year.

Goldsmith had previously recorded back-to-back winning seasons at Rice University in 1992 and 1993. Following his time at Duke, he went on to coach Franklin High School in North Carolina and at Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Goldsmith got his first head coaching opportunity at Slippery Rock University in 1981. He also was an assistant coach at Florida A&M, Air Force and Arkansas.
